Natural household solutions for drains and refrigerator odors

Common household items like baking soda and vinegar can be used to manage domestic issues, though their effectiveness varies depending on the problem.

For clogged drains, while the combination of vinegar and baking soda is popular for minor blockages, it may fail against heavy grease buildup. In such cases, washing soda (sodium carbonate) is more effective due to its alkaline properties, which help break down oils and food residue. A recommended method involves pouring boiling water down the drain to loosen grease, applying washing soda for 15 minutes, and then flushing again with boiling water.

Regarding refrigerator odors, baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) can help control smells through adsorption and by reacting with certain acidic compounds. However, it is not a substitute for cleaning; it can mitigate odors but will not remove the underlying source, such as spoiled food or bacteria. For best results, baking soda should be placed in a shallow, open container to maximize air contact.
