Natural insect repellents and pest management strategies

As the availability of chemical pesticides for individuals decreases due to regulations like the Labbé law, many are turning to natural alternatives for pest control. A popular homemade method involves using a spray made from cinnamon and bay leaf on window frames to deter ants and mosquitoes. This approach relies on aromatic compounds, such as 1,8-cineole from bay leaves and aldehydes from cinnamon, to disrupt the olfactory senses of insects.

While research authorities like INRAE and ANSES recognize the role of plant-based substances in biocontrol, these methods are primarily preventive and local rather than absolute solutions. Effective pest management also requires identifying the specific insect—such as fruit flies, drain flies, or moths—and addressing the root causes, which include food sources, moisture, or unprotected entry points.
