Natural Language Processing technology and its evolution

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field of computer science and artificial intelligence focused on enabling computers to interpret, manipulate, and comprehend human language. It functions as a translator between messy, everyday human communication and the structured data required by computer systems.

The technology has evolved through several distinct stages: from early hand-written rule-based systems used until the 1980s, to statistical machine learning that identifies patterns in large text collections, and more recently to neural networks and transformer architectures. Modern developments include Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Llama, which can generate text and perform complex language tasks.

While NLP and generative AI overlap, they serve different primary functions. Traditional NLP is often more efficient for structured, high-volume tasks like text classification, intent detection, and named entity recognition. In contrast, generative AI is specifically designed to create new content, including text, images, and code. Businesses must choose between these approaches based on whether they require language comprehension and analysis or open-ended content creation.
