Natural light management and enhancement in home design
Natural light plays a significant role in home design, affecting mood, energy efficiency, and interior comfort. While sunlight can make spaces feel larger and cleaner, excessive direct exposure can cause issues such as glare on screens, heat buildup, and the fading of rugs, artwork, or upholstery.
To manage excessive light, solutions like cellular shades can filter brightness and provide thermal buffers. Conversely, for rooms lacking sufficient illumination, skylight installation is an effective method to increase brightness. Skylights can provide up to five times more light than vertical windows of the same size and may reduce the need for artificial lighting by up to 80 percent in certain areas.
Beyond aesthetics, natural light offers health benefits. According to the National Institutes of Health, exposure to daylight can improve mood stability and help regulate sleep cycles. This is particularly relevant as data from the EPA suggests individuals spend nearly 90 percent of their time indoors.
