Natural methods for controlling garden snails
Gardeners can combat snail infestations using natural methods rather than chemical pesticides, which can harm beneficial organisms like hedgehogs, birds, and soil life. One effective strategy involves leaving autumn leaves under hedges and shrubs to create moist habitats for natural predators such as ground beetles, toads, and hedgehogs.
Another method involves using ‘sacrificial plants’ to divert pests away from desired crops. By planting species that snails find highly attractive—such as spinach, lettuce, carrots, basil, or cucumbers—in areas separate from main vegetable beds, gardeners can concentrate the infestation in one location. Additionally, placing wooden boards in the garden can serve as a collection point, as snails tend to gather underneath them for moisture and shelter.
