Natural methods show success in soil and forest restoration

Researchers and environmental agencies are highlighting natural methods for soil restoration and land regeneration in Mexico and Costa Rica.

In Chiapas, Mexico, the Secretaría de Medio Ambiente e Historia Natural (SEMAHN) has noted the importance of the timbre plant (Acaciella angustissima). This legume forms a symbiotic relationship with Sinorhizobium mexicanum bacteria. This process allows for the biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen, converting it into compounds usable by plant roots through nodules in the root system. This mechanism helps restore fertility to degraded lands and reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

In Costa Rica, a study conducted in Coto Brus demonstrated the effectiveness of using agricultural waste for forest recovery. Researchers applied 360 cubic meters of coffee pulp to a degraded plot. After two years, the organic layer successfully suppressed invasive grasses and improved soil nutrient levels, specifically increasing carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The study showed that the treatment significantly accelerated the regeneration of tropical forest cover.
