Natural methods to repel fruit flies and household insects

Various natural methods can be used to manage flies and fruit flies in the home without the use of chemical insecticides.

To combat fruit flies, which are attracted to fermenting sugars in ripening fruit or waste, a simple trap can be made using a recycled jar filled with white vinegar and a small amount of dish soap. Placing this near windows or food sources can intercept the insects. It is important to distinguish fruit flies from drain flies, the latter of which inhabit pipes and require deep cleaning of drains rather than surface traps.

For larger flies during meals, mechanical and olfactory deterrents are effective. Using a fan creates air turbulence that makes it difficult for lightweight insects to fly near food. Additionally, scents such as citronella can act as a natural repellent due to the insects' sensitivity to certain odors.
