Natural spices can repel flies and spiders from homes

Common kitchen spices such as cinnamon, star anise, and cloves can serve as natural alternatives to harsh chemical insecticides for repelling flies, gnats, and spiders from the home.

Cloves are particularly effective due to the presence of eugenol, a compound with an intense scent that insects find unpleasant. Spiders, which rely on sensitive receptors and hairs on their legs to navigate, are also deterred by these strong aromas.

Methods for application include placing whole or ground cloves on windowsills and near doorways. For broader coverage, a homemade spray can be created by mixing one liter of water with 10 to 15 drops of clove essential oil and a few drops of dish soap. Another suggestion involves piercing a halved lemon with cloves to create a fragrant deterrent for kitchen counters and outdoor tables.
