Nature Conservation Agency urges bear sighting reports in Latvia

The Nature Conservation Agency (DAP) is urging residents in Latvia to report sightings of non-aggressive bears through the ‘Dabas dati’ portal. As the bear population grows, there are increasing instances of these animals wandering into populated areas or near farmsteads.

To prevent human-wildlife conflict, the agency advises that sightings of bears in forests, fields, or near farms that avoid humans should be logged on the portal. However, if a bear regularly stays in a populated area or returns to homes due to accessible food sources—such as improperly stored waste, compost, or pet food—residents should immediately notify local municipalities or police to address the attractants.

In cases where a bear enters a densely populated urban area, shows aggression, or poses a direct threat to safety, the emergency number 112 or local police must be contacted immediately. The agency strictly prohibits civilians from interfering with professional operations to ensure the safety of both the public and emergency personnel.
