Nature exposure linked to improved mental health and well-being

Research indicates a significant connection between time spent in nature and improved mental health. A 2019 study published in Scientific Reports involving nearly 20,000 participants found a dose-response relationship, noting that individuals spending at least two hours per week in nature reported significantly greater well-being than those spending less time outdoors.

Healthcare professionals are increasingly recognizing these benefits to combat rising mental health disorders. Some practitioners are now utilizing “nature prescriptions,” which involve prescribing nature-based activities through tools such as leaflets, calendars, and guided outdoor experiences. These methods aim to provide cost-effective alternatives or supplements to traditional medication by helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and high blood pressure.
