Nature Investment Lab develops standardized contracts for carbon projects
The Nature Investment Lab (NIL) is developing a standardized contract model to facilitate financing for reforestation and REDD+ (Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) projects. This standardization aims to address a major barrier preventing these projects from accessing necessary funding lines.
The draft model was presented during Climate Week in New York and was developed through consultations with 25 institutions, including Itaú BBA, Regia Capital, Systemica, Petrobras, and Regreen. The initiative, led by Climate Ventures, seeks to prepare carbon project developers to meet the rigorous requirements of international financiers and buyers.
The next phase involves a public hearing for the draft, with plans to highlight the model during COP31 in Turkey between November 9 and 20. The goal is to finalize the work by the end of the year, supporting the maturation of the carbon market and the potential for carbon to be traded internationally as a commodity.
