Nature Mental Health study defines six pillars of mental well-being

A new international scientific study published in Nature Mental Health has established a comprehensive framework for defining positive mental health. To address the lack of a common scientific language regarding terms like 'well-being' or 'flourishing,' 122 experts from 26 countries and 11 scientific disciplines collaborated to map the concept.

The researchers identified 19 dimensions of mental health, centering on six core pillars: meaning and purpose in life, overall life satisfaction, self-acceptance, meaningful connection with others, autonomy, and happiness. These pillars suggest that well-being depends not only on positive emotions but also on a sense of direction, significant relationships, and the ability to make decisions aligned with personal values.

In addition to these six pillars, the study identified 13 supplementary dimensions, including optimism, a sense of belonging, tranquility, activity, personal growth, and the ability to cope with difficulties.
