Nature organizations in the Netherlands host mushroom educational events

Various nature organizations in the Netherlands are hosting educational events focused on mushrooms this October.

IVN Meijel will host a lecture by Jan Slaats on Thursday, October 22. The session will focus on saprophytic mushrooms—those that digest organic matter—and their vital role in returning nutrients to the soil for trees and plants. The lecture will cover how these fungi use enzymes to break down dead material and will showcase various species, including both generalists and those specific to certain trees like oaks.

Additionally, Natuurmonumenten is organizing a free mushroom festival on Sunday, October 18, at Plantloon within the De Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park. From 10:00 to 16:00, forest rangers will lead activities including microscope investigations, games, and mushroom bingo walks to help visitors identify different species and learn about their ecological roles.
