NaturPak cited after three worker deaths in Wisconsin

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed $364,100 in penalties against NaturPak, a food manufacturer based in Janesville, Wisconsin, following two separate incidents involving industrial kettles.

The first incident occurred on February 12, when a clogged vent line caused pressure to build up, resulting in a kettle lid opening unexpectedly. This released steam, hot liquid, and organic material, hospitalizing two workers; one later died from complications related to their injuries.

A second incident on March 18 involved a kettle lid opening under pressure, which burned three workers. Two of these employees died, and the third was hospitalized.

OSHA issued various citations, including serious and repeat violations regarding kettle design and use, fall protection, lockout/tagout procedures, employee training, personal protective equipment, and lack of access to emergency water. Records indicate the company had previously received a citation for a machine-guarding violation in 2022.
