Naturvernforbundet warns of ecological crisis in Skagerrak
The Norwegian Federation for Nature (Naturvernforbundet) has issued a warning regarding the deteriorating ecological state of the Skagerrak coast. Ragnhild Nilsen, the regional leader for Agder, stated that the area is facing similar issues to the Oslofjord, including collapsing cod populations, increased seaweed growth, and high levels of pollution.
Nilsen identified overfishing, large-scale emissions, and intense development pressure as primary drivers of the crisis. She specifically noted that the Kristiansandfjord remains highly impacted by microplastic runoff and nutrient salts, which threaten kelp forests and vulnerable coastal cod.
In response, Naturvernforbundet is launching a major initiative for Skagerrak, expanding its staff and mobilizing ten local chapters to collaborate with authorities and politicians to protect marine and coastal areas.
