Naughty Dog designer cites set piece issues in Uncharted 3
Former Naughty Dog designer Benson Russell has stated that the development of Uncharted 3 was negatively impacted by an excessive number of scripted set pieces. Speaking with FRVR, Russell explained that while the cinematic sequences in Uncharted 2 emerged organically during production, the team for Uncharted 3 approached development with a different mindset, aiming to replicate the previous game's success by planning numerous large-scale sequences in advance.
During early development, the team brainstormed approximately 10 to 12 major set pieces, including a cargo plane sequence and a Jeep chase. Although the original intention was to select only a small handful of these ideas for the final game, most were ultimately implemented. Russell noted that this approach forced writer and director Amy Hennig to 'shoehorn' the narrative into the pre-existing set pieces rather than allowing the story to dictate the pacing and action.
