Naughty Dog designer reveals Uncharted 1 difficulty tactics
Former Naughty Dog designer Benson Russell has revealed that the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune utilized a dynamic difficulty system specifically designed to slow down skilled players. Because the game’s content was approximately five hours long, the studio implemented a mechanism that increased difficulty if a player completed combat encounters faster than the established average. This was intended to extend the overall playtime of the title.
Russell also discussed broader structural issues within game development, noting that the transition to the PlayStation 3 hardware caused significant technical hurdles. He suggested that many long development cycles, such as those seen at Naughty Dog, could be shortened if studios established a clear creative direction from the start to avoid wasted work.
Regarding current projects, reports indicate that Naughty Dog’s upcoming sci-fi title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, only received a full team after the cancellation of a The Last of Us online project in 2023. There are concerns regarding potential scope creep and long development timelines for the new IP.
