Makkah Defence Alliance appoints Nauman Mahmood as first secretary-general
Pakistan has appointed retired Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood as the first secretary-general of the Makkah Defence Alliance. The tripartite security pact, signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye on August 7, establishes a collective defense framework where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all three.
The alliance's General Secretariat is being established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The secretary-general position is intended to be held on a rotational basis, with the initial term set for three years.
Recent high-level discussions held in New York by the foreign ministers of the three nations focused on operationalizing the agreement and addressing regional security challenges, specifically the ongoing Houthi attacks in Yemen. Military chiefs from the three countries are also scheduled to hold urgent meetings to discuss mechanisms for supporting Saudi Arabia under the terms of the pact.
