Nauru Republic of Naoero David Adeang constitutional amendment name change

The Parliament of Nauru passed a constitutional amendment in May to rename the country the Republic of Naoero, restoring its traditional pre‑colonial name. President David Adeang announced on social media that the originally planned national referendum on the change would not be held, saying the new name is already the identity of the people and is recognised by the constitution.

The abbreviated name will be “Naoero”, the country code will change to NRO and citizens will be referred to as “dei‑Naoero”. The government has formally notified international organisations and other states, and the transition process is under way. Nauru, with a population of about 12,000, is the world’s third‑smallest nation after Vatican City and Monaco. The name “Nauru” was imposed by European colonisers who found the native name “Naoero” difficult to pronounce. The change is presented as a cultural‑heritage move rather than a political one, aimed at preserving the legacy of ancestors and strengthening the future of the children.
