Nauru Renames Itself Republic of Naoero

The Pacific island nation of Nauru officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, aligning the English spelling with the indigenous term used in the Nauruan language. President David Adeang announced the change, describing it as a step to better reflect the country’s cultural heritage, language and national identity. The amendment will require updates to government documents, passports, United Nations listings and foreign diplomatic references. Nauru, a Micronesian state of about 12,000 people that gained independence in 1968, joins a recent wave of countries revising their names to match native usage, such as Türkiye, Eswatini and Cabo Verde.
