Naval Command intercepts millions in smuggled cigarettes and diesel in Mindanao
The Naval Command – Western Mindanao (NCWM) has conducted several maritime enforcement operations resulting in the seizure of millions of pesos worth of smuggled goods, including cigarettes and diesel fuel.
In late July and August 2026, NCWM personnel intercepted multiple shipments of undocumented foreign-brand cigarettes in the Sulu region. One operation off Buton Mahablo in Parang, Sulu, yielded approximately ₱170.14 million in contraband, while an earlier interception off Simisa Island resulted in ₱23 million in seizures. Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno commended the NCWM for these efforts, noting the importance of inter-agency coordination in protecting borders and legitimate trade.
Additionally, separate operations in late August targeted fuel and tobacco smuggling. On August 22, authorities intercepted an unmarked motorboat off Barangay Labuan, Zamboanga City, carrying undocumented diesel fuel valued at approximately ₱52.27 million. Two days later, on August 24, the vessel M/B JIBOY was intercepted off Pangasinan Island, Sulu, carrying 611 master cases and 37 reams of undeclared foreign-brand cigarettes worth roughly ₱95.01 million.
