Naval Group begins production of Sweden's first FDI frigate

Naval Group has commenced production of the first Defence and Intervention Frigate (FDI) for the Royal Swedish Navy, named FDI Luleå. The steel-cutting ceremony took place at the Naval Group shipyard in Lorient, France, approximately one month after the contract for four frigates was signed on August 31, 2026.

The ceremony was attended by Rear-Admiral Fredrik Lindén of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Sweden’s Ambassador to France, Caroline Vicini. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2030.

Naval Group aims to maintain a high production rate through its established FDI production line, which is capable of delivering two frigates per year. The company has expressed a commitment to a long-term industrial partnership with Swedish industry to support the modernization of the Swedish fleet.
