Naval Group boosts frigate output at Lorent shipyard for France and foreign navies
Naval Group granted a rare media visit to its high‑security shipyard in Lorient, Brittany, where thousands of employees assemble warships for the French Navy and export customers.
The yard is expanding production of the FDI (Frégates de Défense et d’Intervention) class. A fifth French frigate was ordered in March 2026, joining four already contracted, and a total programme of nine ships includes four vessels for Greece and future orders for Sweden and a potential contract with Denmark. Each frigate involves about 1,200 staff, 60,000 components and three years of construction, with the line able to deliver two ships per year once fully ramped up.
Naval Group also supplies four attack nuclear submarines and torpedoes to the Netherlands. New hangars are being built to add 150 jobs before year‑end, and the order book is filled through 2034, underscoring the yard’s role as a cornerstone of France’s maritime defence capability and export market.
