Naval Group signs major contract for Swedish Navy frigates

Naval Group has officially signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to supply four Defense and Intervention Frigates (FDI) for the Swedish Navy. The agreement, valued at approximately 4.25 billion euros (47 billion Swedish kronor), was finalized in Stockholm on August 31.

The contract includes the acquisition of the new Luleå-class vessels, which are equipped with Swedish supply systems, training tools, and spare parts. The first frigate is scheduled for delivery in 2030. These next-generation vessels are designed for multi-domain naval combat, including advanced air defense via the Aster missile system, and are specifically optimized for operations in the Baltic Sea, the North Atlantic, and the Arctic.

The signing ceremony was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, alongside their respective defense ministers. In addition to the vessel procurement, the two nations signed a framework cooperation agreement to establish a long-term strategic defense platform. The deal also includes an industrial partnership intended to facilitate technology and knowledge transfers to the Swedish defense ecosystem.
