Navalmoral de la Mata lithium battery gigafactory awaits environmental approval
The lithium battery gigafactory project in Navalmoral de la Mata, Cáceres, is currently awaiting an environmental impact declaration and key sectoral reports. Enrique Hueso, the Mayor of Navalmoral de la Mata, stated that both the local council and the Junta de Extremadura are committed to facilitating the project and are prepared to grant construction licenses once administrative hurdles are cleared.
According to timelines established by the promoting company and the Ministry of Industry under the Perte framework, the project aims to begin its first phase of battery production in the second half of 2027, with a second phase scheduled for the first quarter of 2028. While the project remains in the administrative phase, Spain seeks to consolidate its position as an industrial hub for electric vehicles amidst increasing competition and the need for a secure supply of critical materials for the European energy transition.
