Navanethem Pillay awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee cited her work as chair of a UN Commission of Inquiry regarding the conflict in Gaza as a key factor in their decision.

The award has drawn significant controversy. Pillay’s report, submitted in September 2025, concluded that Israel is guilty of genocide in Gaza, a finding that has been disputed by various governments, legal experts, and human rights organizations regarding its methodology and impartiality.

Critics, including the Israeli Foreign Ministry, have condemned the decision, characterizing it as a legitimization of anti-Israel sentiment. Meanwhile, Hamas officials have welcomed the award as a “message of hope.” Other critics have pointed to Pillay’s past record, alleging she has overlooked human rights abuses in several other nations while maintaining a consistent focus on anti-Israel activism.
