Navantia advances S-80 submarine construction in Cartagena
Construction of the S-80 class submarine series is progressing at the Navantia facilities in Cartagena. The S-83 'Cosme García' has reached a new milestone with the installation of its three diesel generator engines. These engines, alongside the main electric motor and the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, form the core propulsion unit for the class.
Simultaneously, work continues on the S-84 'Mateo García de los Reyes', which is currently undergoing section assembly. The S-80 program includes four units at various stages: the S-81 'Isaac Peral' is already in service and participating in NATO exercises, while the S-82 'Narciso Monturiol' is undergoing testing. Defense Minister Margarita Robles recently visited the shipyard, expressing confidence that the S-82 will be fully operational by the end of the year.
