Navantia completes AIP system testing for S-83 submarine
Navantia has successfully completed testing of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system for the S-83 Cosme García, the third submarine in the S-80 class being built for the Spanish Navy. The trials took place at a specialized testing facility at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena.
The third-generation AIP system utilizes liquid oxygen and bioethanol to generate hydrogen on demand, powering fuel cells to produce electricity during submersion. This technology allows the S-80 submarines to remain submerged for weeks, significantly extending endurance compared to conventional submarines that rely on lead-acid batteries and must surface after only a few days.
The tested section of the submarine measures 12 meters in length and weighs approximately 400 tonnes. The successful integration and performance of this system reinforce Spain’s industrial capability to design and build next-generation conventional submarines.
