Spain renewable energy sector reports economic growth and solar savings

Renewable energy significantly bolstered the Spanish economy in 2025, contributing €17.5 billion to the GDP, representing 1.04% of the national economy. According to a study by Deloitte for APPA Renovables, the sector also reached a record 140,621 jobs, a 5.6% increase from the previous year. Solar photovoltaics led new installations, adding 11.3 GW to the grid.

Solar energy has also driven substantial market savings. Data from UNEF indicates that solar photovoltaics saved €17.021 billion in the Spanish electricity market between January 2025 and June 2026. The report estimates that without solar energy, the average wholesale price would have been 46% higher.

However, challenges remain regarding energy efficiency and grid management. APPA Renovables reports that the amount of wasted renewable energy is increasing, rising from 12% in 2024 to 25% in early 2026. This waste is attributed to production capacity exceeding consumption and grid limitations that require operators to curtail production to maintain stability.
