Navarra unveils agricultural support plan and anti‑depopulation law

The Union of Agricultores y Ganaderos de Navarra (UAGN) presented to the regional Economic and Social Council a package of measures aimed at securing the viability of Navarra’s farming sector. Key proposals include unlocking the Canal de Navarra, abolishing the fertilizer tax, increasing the primary sector budget and enforcing the Food Chain Law to guarantee farmers receive prices that cover production costs.

At the same time, the Government of Navarra, led by President María Chivite, introduced a draft Foral Law against Depopulation and for Rural Development. The law creates an extraordinary fund funded by the regional budget, grants and private contributions, and sets out measures such as mandatory demographic impact assessments, classification of at‑risk municipalities, rural housing programmes, support for autonomous rural entrepreneurship, reinforcement of rural schools, health and social services, broadband access and targeted support for women, youth and the elderly.

Both initiatives aim to curb rising production costs, improve infrastructure and reverse demographic decline in the region.
