Extreme heatwaves trigger diverse health risks and physiological changes

Extreme heatwaves are causing various physiological and health challenges. One significant issue is miliaria, or heat rash, which occurs when sweat ducts become obstructed, leading to red bumps, itching, or even blisters. This condition affects both infants and adults, particularly in hot and humid environments.

High temperatures also impact metabolic and cardiovascular health. Research indicates that heat can increase the perception of physical pain, especially when temperatures exceed 32°C. For individuals with hypertension or cardiovascular disease, heat and high humidity can strain the heart as the body works harder to regulate temperature through increased blood flow to the skin.

Additionally, extreme heat affects appetite and hormonal balance. The body may prioritize thermoregulation over hunger, leading to a reduced desire for heavy foods and a preference for lighter, cooler meals. This shift is driven by biological mechanisms such as changes in leptin and insulin levels. Furthermore, heatwaves combined with power outages pose severe risks to vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those dependent on electrical medical equipment.
