Navarre Institute of Memory opens in renovated Marqués de Rozalejo Palace

The Marqués de Rozalejo Palace in Pamplona has been reopened as the new headquarters for the Navarre Institute of Memory and the General Directorate of Memory and Coexistence. The Government of Navarre invested over 9 million euros to rehabilitate the building, which had been vacant since its eviction in 2019.

During the inauguration, President of Navarre María Chivite emphasized that the space will serve as a symbol of peace and coexistence. She highlighted the importance of historical memory in education to prevent the rise of authoritarian ideologies and denialism among youth, noting recent trends regarding democratic values.

The building previously served as the occupied space known as 'gaztetxe Maravillas,' a site used for social organization, cultural activities, and political debate. Critics of the institutionalization of the space argue that the new use represents a selective approach to history that may overlook the memory of the working class in favor of official political narratives.
