Edwin Reinaldo Rodríguez Cruz detained for murder of teenager in Navarrete

Edwin Reinaldo Rodríguez Cruz has been placed in preventive detention following the murder of 13-year-old Yosnely Álvarez and the sexual assault of a 14-year-old survivor in Navarrete, Santiago.

Rodríguez Cruz, who surrendered to authorities, is accused of feminicide, aggravated sexual violation, torture, and barbarism. The incident occurred when the suspect, traveling by motorcycle, allegedly offered to transport the two teenagers to buy dinner before leading them to a secluded area near the Yaque del Norte River.

During the attack, the suspect reportedly used a knife to wound the 13-year-old multiple times before throwing her body into the river, where it was later recovered. The 14-year-old survivor managed to escape by hiding in the brush.

A judge has ordered Rodríguez Cruz to serve 12 months of preventive detention at the CCR Rafey Hombres center. The court also authorized the early collection of evidence from the survivor to protect her privacy and prevent re-victimization.
