Navdeep Suri faces citizenship verification hurdles during Punjab electoral roll revision

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in India has drawn scrutiny following reports of citizenship verification difficulties. Former Indian diplomat Navdeep Suri, who served as ambassador to Egypt and the UAE and high commissioner to Australia, reported being asked for additional proof of Indian citizenship during the process in Punjab. Suri stated that despite submitting his voter ID and Aadhaar card, officials cited a mismatch with 2003 electoral records. Because he was stationed in London in 2003, he was requested to provide his passport as further evidence.

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram criticized the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging the process could create a category of ‘non-voting citizens’ and suggesting that up to 10% of the adult population could face such issues.

In response to the ongoing revision, officials in various regions have initiated verification drives. In Jharkhand, the Election Commission launched a ‘home to roll verification’ campaign to ensure family members are registered at the same polling stations. In other districts, voters whose details do not match older records are being issued notices to appear for hearings before election officers to retain their names on the final draft electoral roll.
