Naveen Patnaik faces political challenges at age 80
Former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik has turned 80 amid significant political transitions. After leading the BJD to uninterrupted rule in Odisha for 24 years, the party faced a major setback in the 2024 Assembly elections, where the BJP secured 78 of 147 seats, reducing the BJD to 51. The party also failed to win any Lok Sabha seats in the state.
Patnaik, who has served as Leader of the Opposition since June 2024, is currently working to re-establish the BJD as a credible alternative to the BJP. Recent college union election results have provided a point of contention; Patnaik claimed the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) won 50 per cent of university posts and 60 per cent of college seats, alleging that the ruling BJP utilized money and muscle power to influence outcomes.
While Patnaik continues to command respect across party lines, analysts suggest the recent electoral losses have exposed vulnerabilities in a political model heavily centered on his personal leadership, raising questions regarding the party's succession planning and grassroots mobilization.
