Navi Pillay awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

South African jurist Navanethem ‘Navi’ Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong commitment to international law and human rights. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her contributions to expanding the influence of international law, specifically regarding the prosecution of war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

Pillay’s career includes serving as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, as well as serving as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Her work has been noted for pioneering legal recognitions of sexual violence as an element of genocide.

The award has drawn significant political reactions. The Israeli government criticized the decision as a ‘grotesque weaponization’ of the prize, citing Pillay’s previous leadership of a UN Commission of Inquiry into violations in the occupied Palestinian territory and Gaza. Additionally, the United States announced plans to impose sanctions against the International Criminal Court following the announcement.
