Navi Pillay awarded 2026 Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay. The award recognizes her lifelong commitment to promoting international law, human rights, and accountability for war crimes and genocide. Pillay’s career includes serving as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, as well as serving as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.

Her recent work as chair of a UN commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza has drawn significant international attention and controversy. While human rights organizations and UN Secretary-General António Guterres celebrated the award, the decision has faced sharp criticism from political figures. The Israeli government accused the committee of losing its moral compass, and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) following the announcement.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump also reacted negatively, questioning Pillay’s merits and expressing dissatisfaction with the committee's decision. Pillay herself addressed the political tension, describing U.S. sanctions against the ICC as “completely illegal” and “cruel.”
