Iceland debates EEA Protocol 35 following referendum
Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, chairman of the Centre Party, has called for Iceland to challenge potential contract violations regarding Protocol 35 of the EEA Agreement. He argues that the specific wording of the protocol was a unique Icelandic solution rather than an implementation error and maintains that the government should defend Iceland's position against the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA).
Following a national referendum where the majority rejected continued EU membership negotiations, the status of Protocol 35 has become a central political issue. While Gunnlaugsson advocates for legal defense of Iceland's unique arrangement, he expressed doubt that the current government would take such defensive measures in court.
