Navistar truck factory layoffs hit Ohio ahead of Trump midterm rally

Nearly 1,400 employees were laid off from the Navistar truck factory in southwestern Ohio, an event that effectively erased a year of job growth for the greater Dayton area. The layoffs occurred just three days before a campaign rally by Donald Trump in the region.

During his visit to Vandalia, Ohio, Trump rallied for Republican candidates, including Senator Jon Husted and gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. He predicted a “big surprise” in the upcoming November 3 midterms and suggested that Republican control of Congress would ensure continued federal assistance for the state. Conversely, he warned that he would be less inclined to assist Ohio if Democrats win key races.

Trump also renewed a promise to provide $5,000 checks to all adult U.S. citizens if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate. Additionally, the White House announced $90 payments to over 20 million Medicare beneficiaries to assist with premium costs.

Displaced workers from the Navistar plant expressed economic frustration, citing inflation and rising costs. Some employees are hoping to be rehired by Roshel, a Canadian manufacturer that has expressed interest in protecting the workforce and potentially doubling its employee count at the facility in the coming years.
