Navy expansion of Fallon Range training complex threatens Nevada ranch families

The U.S. Navy is acquiring more than 769,000 acres to enlarge the Fallon Range Training Complex in western Nevada, a move approved in a scaled‑back form by the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. About 489,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management land were transferred to Navy control for expanded pilot training.

Eight ranching families, including the Snow family, say the expansion will cut off vital high‑desert grazing land that sustains their cattle operations. They allege the Navy’s compensation offer is far below the value of the land; the Snow family was offered $1.48 million for projected losses over a century, while a USDA valuation puts the annual forage value at roughly $815,000. Rancher Justin Snow warned, "You’re breaking me as a rancher right now," describing the proposed payment of $14,000 a year as unacceptable.

The families argue the Navy is disregarding established agricultural valuation methods, raising concerns about the long‑term impact on Nevada’s ranching heritage and local economies.
