Navy personnel face legal and disciplinary actions in Taiwan and Japan

In Taiwan, the Supreme Court has finalized a 3-year and 4-month prison sentence for a Navy major identified by the surname Luo. The court ruled that in May 2024, while on a business trip to Yilan, Luo sexually assaulted a female officer while she was intoxicated in their hotel room.

Luo had claimed the encounter was consensual, but investigators found DNA evidence matching the victim and corroborated her detailed testimony regarding the assault. The court noted that Luo exploited his higher rank and the victim's trust, causing lasting psychological harm.

In Japan, the Maizuru District Headquarters of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force issued disciplinary actions against two personnel. A petty officer in his 30s received a 126-day suspension following a drunk driving incident in 2021 and subsequent violations involving the unauthorized possession of alcohol in barracks.

Additionally, a lieutenant commander in his 50s received a one-month salary reduction for failing to conduct necessary personnel evaluations and interviews with subordinates.
