Navy Reserve Subofficer Assaults Wheelchair-Bound Son in João Pessoa
On the night of 29 July 2026, a Navy reserve sub‑officer, Antônio Luiz, was captured on security‑camera footage striking his 25‑year‑old son, who uses a wheelchair after a March motorcycle accident, inside a condominium in the Bessa district of João Pessoa, Paraíba. The assault began after a urine‑collection bag leaked and wet the car seat.
The video spread on social media, prompting the father to present himself voluntarily to the João Pessoa Civil Police, where he gave a statement and was released. Police logged a bulletin, opened an investigation, and are examining prior intimidation reports and alleged firearm possession. The condominium had earlier filed a complaint against Luiz with the Navy.
The victim’s mother, Fernanda Rocha, posted a video saying she was not surprised by the attack, citing a history of abuse and the father’s habit of carrying a gun. The Capitania dos Portos of Paraíba received the complaint and must respond within five business days.
