Nawaf Salam opens Beirut International Book Fair
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam officially opened the Beirut International Book Fair, emphasizing the importance of intellectual reflection in an era of rapid technological change and artificial intelligence. In his address, Salam highlighted Beirut’s historical role as a cultural hub for Arab thinkers and noted that while the publishing industry faces significant economic challenges, there remains a vital spirit of creativity among the youth.
Salam stated that Lebanon requires a comprehensive renaissance that goes beyond physical reconstruction to include the restoration of state institutions and the concept of citizenship. He stressed that true sovereignty requires the end of Israeli occupation and a commitment to the rule of law.
On the sidelines of the fair, Salam met with Syrian Minister of Culture Mohammad Yassin Saleh. The two officials discussed strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual respect for sovereignty and independence. Saleh expressed a desire to build institutional partnerships, while Salam emphasized that the historical and cultural ties between the two peoples should serve as a foundation for cooperation in arts and culture.
