Nawaz Sharif vows development push for Azad Kashmir

Nawaz Sharif, leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has acknowledged that successive governments in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) failed to meet public expectations. Speaking at a party convention in Murree, Sharif addressed the political instability and grievances in the region, vowing that his party would prioritize a major development push to address these issues.

The PML-N appears positioned to secure a majority in the 53-member legislative assembly following phased elections. These elections took place amid significant tension, including protests by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), allegations of rigging, and deadly clashes in late July. The region also experienced internet blackouts and road closures during the voting process.

Sharif outlined a vision for transforming the region through improved infrastructure, including better roads, hospitals, and tourism facilities. He also proposed social initiatives such as student scholarships, laptops, and a farmers’ card. Additionally, he called for increased funding and improved public services, suggesting that the welfare of the people must remain the government’s primary focus.
