Naxos Mountain Region Targets Sustainable Development Blueprint

The second meeting of the Naxos Sustainable Development Network took place on 6‑7 June at the Koroni Cultural Center, organized with the Institute for Regional Development of Panteion University. Representatives of the Greek state, local authorities, the scientific community and residents discussed a coordinated plan to make the mountainous parts of Naxos a national model for sustainable growth, with anticipated EU backing.

Deputy Minister for Aegean and Island Policy Manolis Koutoulakis stressed that the island’s mountainous terrain and insular character require special policy measures, including targeted funding for primary sectors, livestock, mining and infrastructure. He highlighted projects on flood protection, desalination and dam construction, as well as the need for sustainable spatial planning that preserves the cultural landscape. Mayor Dimitris Lianis added that effective policies, consistent financing tools and strong local governance are essential for retaining youth and fostering entrepreneurship in the region.

The participants pledged to develop a concrete action plan that addresses transport, water resources, cultural heritage and incentives for young people, aiming to position mountainous Naxos at the forefront of Greece’s sustainable development efforts.
