Naxos Municipality files lawsuit against new renewable energy spatial planning
Local authorities in Greece are initiating legal action against the new Special Spatial Planning Framework for Renewable Energy Sources (RES). The Municipality of Naxos and Lesser Cyclades has unanimously decided to file a petition for annulment and suspension with the Council of State regarding a ministerial decision that establishes the new framework.
The municipality argues that the energy planning cannot be applied through horizontal rules without considering the specific environmental, cultural, and carrying capacity of individual islands. Specifically, the municipality opposes the designation of areas like Drymalia as suitable for industrial wind farms, claiming such developments conflict with the islands' natural and cultural capital and existing development models.
This legal movement follows broader resistance across the Cyclades, including Andros, where local authorities have also sought special spatial protection and exemption from being designated as areas for new RES projects. The conflict highlights a growing tension between national renewable energy goals and the preservation of tourism-driven landscapes and local community interests.
