Nayarit aircraft crash investigation targets possible attack on Governor

A private Cessna Citation 501 aircraft, registration XB-BAR, crashed in the mountainous region of Ixtlán del Río, Nayarit, on Sunday, October 4. The flight had departed from Tepic International Airport destined for Aguascalientes. The crash resulted in the deaths of the pilot, Óscar Quezada, and the co-pilot, Ángel Ricardo Granados Vargas.

The Nayarit Prosecutor's Office is investigating whether the crash was a targeted attack against Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero. Although the Governor was not on board, the aircraft was frequently used by him and his family. The investigation follows the recent arrest of a criminal operative known as “Talibán 2,” whose seized mobile devices reportedly contained detailed flight logs, including schedules, aircraft registrations, and passenger lists for the Governor and other officials.

While state prosecutors are exploring the possibility of an assassination attempt, they are also considering mechanical failure or adverse weather conditions as potential causes. President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the federal security cabinet has not identified any evidence linking the incident to a direct threat against the Governor, suggesting a mechanical malfunction instead. The Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) is set to assume the investigation due to its aeronautical nature.
