Latin American elections: Brazil, El Salvador, and Paraguay report key updates
Major political developments are unfolding across Latin America. In Brazil, polling stations have closed for presidential, regional, and legislative elections. The race is expected to be extremely close between incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with both candidates polling around 40%. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be held on October 25.
In El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele maintains high public support, with a TResearch survey placing his approval rating at 90%. While his popularity remains strong, citizens identified the economy as the country’s primary concern. Additionally, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal has confirmed that general elections will take place on February 28, 2027, where Bukele is expected to seek a third term.
In Paraguay, municipal elections are underway. Camilo Pérez, the candidate for the Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR), expressed satisfaction with preliminary results for the Intendencia of Asunción. Meanwhile, the electoral justice system has implemented a ‘Voto en Casa’ (Vote at Home) program, allowing 608 voters with severe disabilities or illnesses to cast their ballots from their residences across 19 districts.
