Nayib Bukele relocates Francisco Morazán remains to new San Salvador mausoleum

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has overseen the transfer of the remains of Francisco Morazán to a newly constructed mausoleum in the Jardín Centroamérica, located next to the National Palace in San Salvador. Morazán, a military leader and the last president of the Federal Republic of Central America, remains a central symbol of regional unification.

The relocation from the Cementerio de los Ilustres is part of a broader urban renewal project in San Salvador’s historic center. While some view the move as a way to reclaim historical memory, others suggest it serves political purposes.

The new site incorporates a historic facade that survived the demolition of 12 buildings during the area's redevelopment. Research indicates this facade originally belonged to the Casa Dueñas, an eclectic neo-Renaissance property designed by Italian architect Augusto Baratta Del Vecchio for the family of former president Francisco Dueñas Díaz.
