Nayib Bukele Secures Party Nomination for 2027 Presidential Run

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador was confirmed by his ruling party, Nuevas Ideas, as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election after winning the party’s internal primary. The primary, held with Bukele as the only contender, follows a series of constitutional reforms passed in July 2025 that abolished term limits, extended the presidential term to six years, eliminated a second‑round runoff and synchronized presidential and local elections. These changes, enacted by a Congress dominated by Bukele’s allies, have been described by opposition legislators as a “death of democracy.”

Bukele enjoys high public approval—surveys cite support above 80 %—largely due to his security crackdown on gangs under a state of exception that has reduced homicide rates to historic lows. Critics, however, warn that the security measures have involved mass detentions, alleged human‑rights violations and a concentration of power over the judiciary, legislature and law‑enforcement agencies. With no viable opposition candidate, Bukele will run with Vice President Félix Ulloa in the upcoming election, further consolidating his political dominance.

The nomination underscores the continued debate over El Salvador’s democratic trajectory, as international observers and human‑rights groups monitor the impact of the reforms and the president’s extended rule.
